The IELTS Writing test can seem daunting but with consistent practice and the right strategies, you can significantly improve your score. Here's a few key tips, covering both Task 1 and Task 2. It's important to note that Task 2 carries double the weight of Task 1 in the final Writing band score. This means that your performance in Task 2 has a greater impact on your overall score.

The IELTS Writing test, is evaluated based on four equally weighted criteria:

  • Task Achievement/Task Response:

    • This assesses how well you've addressed the requirements of the task.

    • In Task 1, it's about accurately presenting the information.

    • In Task 2, it's about how well you've developed and supported your argument.

  • Coherence and Cohesion:

    • This measures the logical organization of your writing and the effective use of linking words and cohesive devices.

  • Lexical Resource:

    • This evaluates the range and accuracy of your vocabulary.

  • Grammatical Range and Accuracy:

    • This assesses the variety and correctness of your grammatical structures.

Band Scores:

  • Each of these four criteria is scored on a scale of 0 to 9.

  • You'll receive a separate band score for each criterion.

  • These individual scores are then combined to determine your overall Writing band score.

Examiners use detailed band descriptors to assess your performance against each criterion. These descriptors provide clear guidelines for each band level. Consistency and accuracy are highly valued. Understanding the scoring criteria allows you to focus your preparation and maximize your potential.

Use the word count function to get an idea of what your minimum and maximum look like.  If you tend to write too little, I would suggest reviewing synonyms and building vocabulary skills.  If you tend to write too lengthy, read through and see what non essential information can be cut.  Like everything it takes practice and discipline to achieve the desired result.  For more information about IELTS preparation contact us at info@themonferratofarm.com or whatsapp 392.645.8022
